DIY: Dye Job

I've had a denim overall pinafore for a couple of years now (you might remember it from my Forth of July post here). I bought it when Stars and Stripes were the all the rage and as quick as the trend faded, so did my desire to wear the dress.

To give it a new life I decided to dye it black. I wasn't sure how well it would work since it's patterned but figured I wasn't wearing it anyway, so may as well give it a go.

I bought some Rit dye from Lincraft and chose the dying in a bucket technique. (hint: when you're buying dye, make sure you use the right dye for your type of fabric or else you won't get an as effective colour result. If it's cotton, you can also add salt to intensify the colour.)

I'm really happy with the outcome. It's still patterned but much more grunge and you would barely know it's the American flag making it much more wearable. The thread used in this item was polyester or some other fibre as the colour didn't take to it and stayed white, but I do prefer it that way.

See the final result below.
